A small press with a long memory

Prime Press, Inc. was a science fiction and fantasy specialty publishing house founded in 1947. In its brief first life it published a number of notable science fiction books.

The founders were all members of the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society (PSFS). They originally meant the press to focus on writers who lived in the Philadelphia area or had ties to the society.

That spirit still guides the group: books begin with people who care about stories.

  1. Oswald Train, James A. Williams, Alfred C. Prime and Armand E. Waldo found Prime Press as members of the PSFS.

  2. Prime and Waldo ask Williams and Train to buy them out.

  3. Williams dies suddenly. Train cannot continue the press on his own.

  4. The planned next title, Lost Continents by L. Sprague de Camp, had its signatures printed by Prime. The project passed to Gnome Press, which bound them with a new title page.

  5. The Prime Press name continues through Prime Press, Inc. and its hybrid publishing department, Prime Book Agency.
